Growing the solar pie: how BIPV unlocks new growth opportunities

Europe’s solar market has indeed boomed for the last four years, but Solar Power Europe predicts these record levels will now drop “considerably below” the recent 40% to 55% growth rates due to increasingly difficult market conditions and emerging structural grid issues.

In the face of this cooling market, solar proponents will need to become savvier at unlocking demand through new use cases. Building-Integrated Photovoltaics, or BIPV, can do just this – growing the solar pie by innovating new ways to apply solar technology to places previously locked out of the market.

Europe today dominates the BIPV segment, accounting for more than one third of the global market – a trend expected to be further solidified in the near future with the introduction of BIPV-related policies in multiple regions. For instance, both Germany and France have recently mandated solar for new carpark developments, with Italy and Switzerland eyeing similar policies, and numerous other European nations setting aggressive solar targets – budding a new market with enormous potential.

Technological advances are simultaneously allowing solar to be fitted on low-load bearing roofs, opening up new industrial and historical precincts for development, while plug-and-play solar panels coupled with regulatory reforms have led to a balcony solar ‘boom’ in Germany.
